A British documentary maker claims the Vatican could be bracing itself for the prospect of an extraterrestrial encounter, with the Pope potentially addressing "first contact" with aliens in the coming year.

UAP Research Center ($2.5 million annually): The aviation education grant program enables New Jersey public universities to apply for funding to establish a Center for the Study of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. Across the USA in the 1950s, there were numerous reports of strange phone calls, radio interruptions and mechanical recordings from discarnate voices, often metallic-sounding. Contactee Richard Miller publicized a number of recordings he had that were allegedly spontaneously imprinted on tape within sealed canisters. I learned one of my favorite UFO-related phrases from these events: Odunay Vasu Baragas (sometimes spelled Adonai Vasu Barragas). Even into the 1990s, similar events occurred, like the case of Gary Sudbrink.

Erich von Däniken, the Swiss author whose bestselling books about the extraterrestrial origins of ancient civilizations brought him fame among paranormal enthusiasts and scorn from the scientific community, has died. He was 90. Von Däniken’s representatives announced on his website that he had died on January 10, 2026, in a hospital in central Switzerland.

In 2017, I became fiercely interested in the subject of UFOs or UAP (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena). This began for me with a New York Times article revealing Pentagon videos of an encounter between U.S. Navy jets on a training exercise and an anomalous object off the coast of San Diego.

In August 1977, a radio telescope in Ohio that was part of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI Institute) picked up a brief, powerful radio signal from space that no one has ever been able to explain. The burst lasted just over a minute, appeared at a highly specific frequency, and was never seen again, yet it looked exactly like the kind of signal scientists hoped might come from beyond Earth.
