Iconic X-Files TV Series To Get Reboot

Hollywood, CA, March 9, 2026 – Editor’s Note: The story below first appeared on the CBR.com website by writer Monica Coman on Feb. 23, 2026, and can be seen here: https://www.cbr.com/ryan-coogler-x-files-reboot-hulu-pilot-order-danielle-deadwyler-cast/?ref=ufouapwtf.com

Ryan Coogler's The X-Files reboot has just received a major update. After years stuck in early development, the series has just received a Hulu pilot order.

Alongside the pilot, Danielle Deadwyler has also been cast as co-lead in the upcoming The X-Files reboot, per Deadline. Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test) has come on board as showrunner.

The Sinners filmmaker Coogler, who has just made history at the BAFTA Awards with his win, is writing and directing the pilot for the new X-Files.

The upcoming pilot for The X-Files reboot follows two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents, who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena. One of the FBI agents is played by Deadwyler.

Danielle Deadwyler received praise for her performance in 2024's The Piano Lesson, as well as 2022's Till and 2024's 40 Acres.

So far, none of the original cast members are attached to the pilot. Showrunner Jennifer Yale will executive produce alongside The X-Files creator Chris Carter as well as Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media. Sinners casting director Francine Maisler was involved in casting for the upcoming pilot.

The most recent update about The X-Files reboot came earlier in February. The filmmaker was announced to reboot the hit sci-fi series in March 2023, and it was a long road until Hulu greenlit the sequel. However, the long time in development was due to Coogler's busy schedule, which included Sinners and the upcoming Black Panther 3, as well as his devotion to the source material.

"That show is what I used to watch with my mom," Coogler explained during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

"It's one of the most beautiful American television shows ever made. Chris Carter will tell you, he was trying to make Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and for me that's what it's all about: When you as an artist [are] trying to capture something that you were influenced by and make something totally new."

He shared recently, "There are times when I wish that I could separate and have a day where I’m not anxious about having to deliver the draft," he admitted. During the interview, he noted he was "in deep now," and that the current day was "a good day." He admitted, "Been a lot of days that weren’t so good."

One Original X-Files Star Shared Their Interest in the Reboot

The X-Files sci-fi thriller series kicked off in 1993 and aired for a total of 11 seasons, with the last two being two revival seasons. The X-Files starred Gillian Anderson as Scully and David Duchovny as Mulder in the leading roles, although Duchovny left the series at the end of Season 7. He returned to reprise his role in Season 8 briefly, and was a main character in the 2016 revival, which marked the show's Season 10, and in Season 11.

So far, the two aren't confirmed to return. However, Anderson tentatively addressed the upcoming X-Files reboot when speaking to CBR, and shared, "There may be a certain point where I end up, maybe in a few years or something, if Ryan Coogler does get X-Files off the ground, that I would dip into Scully again under his tutelage."

The X-Files reboot doesn't have a release date.
