Why Noticing Synchronicity Matters
Special Guest Column By Sev Tok
Florida, Feb 2, 2026 -- Carl Jung, founder of analytical psychology, coined the word synchronicity in 1928 to describe "a casual connecting principle," where internal, psychological events are linked to the external world by meaningful coincidences that go beyond chance.
Most of us have experienced synchronicity. I actually rely on it to lead me in the right direction, provide clarity, and for validation. When synchronistic events happen, I know I am in the flow, making the best decisions aligned with my needs and desires.
Here are some examples of synchronicity as it may manifest in your life.
Thinking of someone, and they text or call moments later
Opening a book to a random page that speaks directly to your current situation
Meeting someone “by chance” who provides exactly the insight or connection you need
Dreaming of an image or symbol, then seeing it in waking life
Repeatedly seeing the same number sequence (11:11, 2:22, etc.)
Animals or objects appearing at meaningful moments
Asking for a sign: a bird, feather, butterfly, penny, song, etc. - you choose the sign, and it shows up
In the research study, “An under-explored pathway to life satisfaction: The development and validation of the synchronicity awareness and meaning-detecting scale” by Pninit Russo-Netzer and Tamar Icekson, the psychological effects of noticing synchronicity is studied. Is there a correlation between awareness of synchronicity and life satisfaction, level of optimism, and finding meaning in life?
The authors created a new psychological measure:
The Synchronicity Awareness and Meaning-Detecting Scale (SAMD) which measures Synchronicity Awareness (SA): noticing synchronicity and Meaning-Detecting (MD): interpreting the synchronistic signs as meaningful.
640 adults participated in the study.
Results: the SAMD scale is reliable and valid, and people who have a higher SA and MD tend to perceive their lives as more meaningful, have greater optimism, and higher life satisfaction.
Basically, consciously noticing the synchronicities in your life, not ignoring them, and interpreting them meaningfully leads to higher life satisfaction. The spiritual psyche sees the "coincidences" not as random but aligned with the energy of the thoughts, desires, and questions of the person. Things are happening not through force, but through flow. The interconnectedness of life is displayed through synchronicities. Mind, emotion, and reality are not separate.
Noticing the synchronicities in your life can make you feel powerful because it suggests that life has intelligence, you can trust your inner guidance, and life feels purposeful rather than accidental.
Synchronicity is a psychological resource, not just a spiritual idea.
Synchronistic signs are deeply personal. What an owl represents to me may hold an entirely different meaning for you. This isn’t about interpreting signs correctly, but cultivating a deeper relationship with yourself and the world around you.
