First detected on July 1, 2025, by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, 3I/ATLAS is the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system.
Harvard Astrophysicist Dr. Avi Loeb points to several unusual features of the object, including its lack of a tail, its strange trajectory, and the absence of gas emissions.
These anomalies have led him to propose that 3I/ATLAS might be an artificial spacecraft rather than a natural comet.

Loeb has assigned a moderate likelihood of 6 out of 10 on his "Loeb Scale" that the object could be of artificial origin.
This is in stark contrast to NASA's stance, which continues to classify 3I/ATLAS as a natural interstellar comet.
NASA has also stated that the object poses no threat to Earth and will pass just inside Mars' orbit on October 30, 2025.
Despite NASA's assessment, Loeb and other scientists are keenly observing 3I/ATLAS as it nears the Sun to gather more data.
Loeb has suggested that NASA repurpose its Juno spacecraft, currently in orbit around Jupiter, to study the object more closely.
The debate between natural and artificial explanations for 3I/ATLAS has sparked wider discussions about extraterrestrial intelligence.
As more data is collected, scientists hope to better understand the nature of this mysterious interstellar object.
The outcome could shape how we approach the search for extraterrestrial life in the future.
